DETAILS
An imposing abstract plaster sculpture titled ‘La Source’, made by Maurice Carlier around 1945. This sculpture was the centrepiece of his expositions between 1945-1950. Made in his workshop in the 40’s, Carlier would call his different plaster formations ‘heliosculptures’. These series of sculptures were closely related and inspired by architecture and the elements of its natural surroundings. Typified by their strong volumes and shapes, his sculptures have the ability to cast different shadows and light emissions depending on the surroundings, causing an ever changing experience of the subject.

Carlier demonstrated the endless variations and possibilities of how light and shadow can alter a sculpture and it’s relief entirely. He even went as far as to contact the Royal Belgian Observatory to obtain data on the course of the sun over the year, for different latitudes of places in the world. This data allowed him to build a so called "sun machine". His studio at that time partly turned into a laboratory where he experimented on plaster reliefs which were created specifically for these experiments.

Having left no children, the content of his studio was brought onto the market after his widow's death. An important number of works were auctioned off in 1985 in Paris: for many collectors the first time to be able to discover or acquire works by this extraordinary artist. The variety of works left by Maurice Carlier reveal a complete and complex artist, who may easily be considered as one of the most original and interesting sculptors of Post War Belgium.
